Beliefs are birth from our experiences, the experiences of those around us, and the experiences of those who came before us. Every moment, as we travel through life, our beliefs are being formed and we are helping others form their beliefs. Michael Jackson, Prince, and Beyoncé shaped the beliefs of people they have never met because they made music that touched their souls. Jesus, Buddha and Muhammad shaped the beliefs of countless millions with pure words.
People play critical roles in enforcing beliefs in our minds. If enough people confirm an idea, we believe it to be true, no matter how detrimental the idea may be. But we have a choice, we can choose the beliefs we let it. Beliefs can give us power, or they can diminish our power. As entrepreneurs, it is critical that we learn how to feed the empowering beliefs and starve the disempowering ones.
When we are born, our minds are like a blank canvas, and every moment of our life the canvas is being painted by all the sights, sounds, smells, and thoughts from people past, present, and every walk of life. As we grow, our beliefs are formed.
What do you believe? "Close your eyes and see what you Believe." To see what you believe all you need to do is close your eyes and breathe. Those beliefs will playback in your mind like a movie. Just sit back, relax, and watch.
Once a belief is ingrained in our mind, it is impossible to be convinced otherwise. It is human nature to fight fiercely to protect what we believe. How do you feel when your beliefs are challenged, do you get upset, do you want to fight? Think of the last time someone proved you wrong. Why do we get defensive when our beliefs are challenged? Why do we get angry if someone says something we don't believe? Maybe, it's because, in order to change a deeply rooted belief, our bodies will have to undergo neurological and chemical changes. Our minds have to be rewired. Beliefs, literally, “make up who we are.” Adopting a new set of beliefs will change our whole world view and that is no small feat.
